Elementary school "Drago Milović" - Tivat
|
In 1842 the municipality of Tivat made a demand to regional commission for elementary schools of Dalmatia in Zadar to be allowed to open an elementary school. In this demand people of the town asked for the school in their mother tongue and that was the reason why this demand was ignored for three years by the County prefecture of Kotor and the commission in Zadar, officially called 'I. R. Inspettorate in Capo nell' Organizz. delle Scuole Elementari di tutta la Dalmazia'.
In 1845 the mayor of Tivat made another demand and Tivat was allowed to open an elementary school in Italian language. On 19th November 1845, after usual sermon, the lessons started in a small church house where there was the municipality center at the time.
The first teacher in Tivat was Jakov Zabarin, who was also secretary of municipality. He was paid 100 fiorini a year for his teaching. During first academic year 1845/46 the school was attended by 28 students, only boys, because girls were not sent to school then.

Since there was more children in Tivat then, school had to move from small church premises into new private house of Anton Golub, and another class was started in that year. Only in 1893 a female class was started and their teacher was the wife of teacher Antun Zezeljic.
In November 1898 the school building, started in 1890 on initiative of teacher Zezeljic was finished. Zezeljic, as a young teacher started an orchestra and dedicated himself to cultural life and entertainment in Tivat. One of the school's employees was Mirković Ivo from Budva, who was a successful writer and musician, and after him Krsto Markovic from Gornja lastva. Markovic is well known as a poet, historian and writer.
1In 1920 the headmaster of four year school becomes Sime Rajcevic from Tivat. Rajcevic was an excellent musician, and above all model educator and teacher. He takes the credits for the start of Comprehensive school in Tivat in 1926/1927.
First headmaster of the new school was Petar Brinic from Krtoli and then Drago Milovic, who was a teacher in Herceg Novi. Since the school premises were small, the construction of another part of the building was started in 1929 and it also accommodated Comprehensive school.
The Comprehensive school, though young, managed gathering a number of very capable and enthusiastic young educators, and got a good reputation.

During Italian occupation, the town authorities arrested the headmaster Drecun and many teachers and brought their people, mostly fascists to their places. The enemy destroyed large part of school archives and a great deal of school library. After liberation the school started its work.
Under new circumstances the school started proper development, using all advantages of a free socialist country.
Today, the school bears the name of Drago Milovic, its headmaster for many years, who was shot by the Germans on Troica on 17th November 1943.
