Tivat

TIVAT - TEODO
( Timotej Gizila   17-th century )

-On the coast you can see a beautiful and fertile village of Tivat, inhabited by respectable people because of mild air and abundance of resources. The wine that they make is very delicious and such is olive oil that they make plenty of. Due to mild climate they grow a lot of excellent fruit of all kinds.

-All gardens and estates of noblemen from Kotor are there and they put great effort into making their income there. You can see three or four very fashionable palaces with gardens like those in Italy with cypress tree, jasmine, rosemary, roses of all kinds with several small fortresses and towers made for defense... When the Turks who sail up the coast attack them, they withdraw inside

-Teudo or Theda is a kind of wood that they get from wild pine tree, which fishermen use to make light in the night. This valley that is joy, light and shine of all others in this bay got its name after it.

-According to some other sources, name Tivat comes from the name of old Ilyric queen Teute, whose residence was in Risan and summer residence between the church of St Roco in Donja Lastva and Seljanovo.

-The name could also come from the names of old Christian saints: Sanctus Theodulus, Theodocius or Theodotus.

-Besides popular name Theudo, there is also a Latin expression Latus Tiuveti from 16th century.

-Finally the name could originate from Celtic word "touto" which means town.

Archeological discoveries in modern times show that this area was inhabited in prehistoric times.
Many locations show that there were old Roman and Greek settlements where today Tivat is. Tombs and tombstones from Roman period were discovered in Lastva and Opatovo.

-Rapid development of Tivat started in second half of 19th century when Austrian empire built a maritime arsenal for its fleet. Still the town shaped itself by developing industry of small capacity. The period between two world wars was marked with syndicate activity in Racica, Krtoli and Arsenal. In the beginning of 1918, here in Tivat Bay there was an uprising of sailors against mighty and large Austrian empire. With great approval and support, people from this area and workers of arsenal followed the revolutionary actions of the sailors. This upraising wrote the name of Tivat into our history with golden letters.

Spasić and Mašera
-Nearby Prevlaka- Island of Flowers, while the fascists were invading our country on April 1941, young Yugoslav navy officers Spasic and Masera, defying the enemy, blew up beautiful navy ship, destroyer Zagreb, to prevent enemy from taking it. Spiting the death, they went to the bottom of the sea with the remaining of the ship. With their heroic and incomparable deed they showed to the world how to live and die for dignity, honor and freedom of your people.

WITH RESPECT WE REMEMBER YUGOSLAV NAVY LIUTENANT-COMMANDERS SPASIC AND MASERA, WHO BLEW UP DESTROYER "ZAGREB" SO THAT THE FASCISTS WOULD NOT TAKE IT, AND WENT WITH IT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA – TITO    (klick to get larger image)

Home page - Town  - Climate

-Geographical position has formed specific climate of the area. This type of climate has Mediterranean features and is characterized by mild and rainy winters, dry and warm summers with plenty of sun and calm weather.

-The location inside the bay protects it from the winds of the open sea and Vrmac hill hides it from cold air from the north and east (Orjen and Lovcen mountains) creating a specific climate with dominant Mediterranean features, plenty of sun, modest amount of rain and small influence of south and north winds. Windy weather takes up about 50.5% of the year and calm weather 49.5%. Dominant wind is from the south-west in the morning and north-west in the afternoon. Beside them there is a dominance of winds from south, north-east and north. These influences are present more in the town coastal area and less in Tivat field where the weather is calmer, which suits the air traffic. The third climatic type is in Krtoli area and it’s characterized with less rain and south-west wind which is convenient for tourism.
-Specific geomorphologic situation had influence on water disposition in Tivat area. There is more rain in higher area (Vrmac hill as well as mountain Lovcen and limestone terrain determined water flow. Tivat hill receives most water (The Gradiosnica, The Siroka River, Ljesnica brook and Koluzinja brook. Southwest side of Vrmac hill is rich with brooks that are formed periodically, like Plavda, Rosino, Cesljar and Toplis.

-Mild climate is suitable for diverse flora. A lot of ground, covered with olives, pine wood, Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants and trees makes staying here pleasant. Excursions, sports, and various cultural events and festivals make it even better.

Great park

-Big town park and the small park in the centre of the town make Tivat a typical town of Mediterranean coast. The park itself was built from the custom that said:” before he gets married, every seaman must plant a tree”. Town park of Tivat is one of the most beautiful and largest in Boka Kotorska, with various trees that our seamen brought from all over the world. A curiosity is two trees of eukarija, unique on the Balkans.

-With its central town position the park benefits the ecology and tourism of the town and protects the health of its citizens. The little park in the very centre of the town is very attractive for children play and as a place to rest in for adults. It has many visitors from the youngest to the oldest.
